We are proud to present our second line up of speakers for the inaugural We Sow We Grow Summit happening virtually September 25 – 27, 2020. Join us on the Zoom platform with general sessions and breakouts in three different tracts – vegetable gardening, floral gardening, and cooking from the garden. Tickets can be found on EventBrite.
- Interested in gardening but not too keen on traditional techniques like sowing, tilling, and weeding? Belinda Bullard presents Using No-Dig/ No-Till Gardening Techniques to Enhance Your Gardening Experience, a fantastic entry point for those who struggle with certain physical challenges in gardening. During her session, Belinda will explore how no-dig gardening is the most inexpensive ways to begin gardening, and over time, yields great results with less effort, build the health of soil, and minimize weeds. After trying traditional tilling and container gardening, Belinda sought a new route of gardening, not wanting to give up because of her arthritis and found no-dig beds easy to install and maintain. Belinda has been featured at Great Homeschool Conventions, the Southeast Homeschool Expo, African American Homeschool Moms, and Society of Homeschoolers of Southwest Home Education Ministry.
- Presenting “Gardening as Uncommon Rebellion,” Colah B. Tawkin talks about empowerment to start growing your own food, information on grocery store produce limitations, and a better understanding of the importance of food equity. Colah speaks at length on rebellion in gardening and related topics each week on his podcast, Black in the Garden and most recently was a guest on the award-winning Cultivating Place podcast.
- Eager to take on a DIY gardening challenge? Derrick Worthey guides us through the construction of a raised bed that’s easy to build and the perfect solution for a home garden. During his presentation, Derrick will supply a material list and suggested tools needed to make this project a success. Derrick and his other half, Tatanisha, are founders of the travel, entertainment, food, and parenting website, This Worthey Life.
- Master urban gardener, Kara Carrero, swears by soil health in the garden. In her presentation, “Your garden is only as good as its soil: How to no-till, no-stress address soil health” Kara explains how a healthy base supports plant growth and why tilling kills the ecosystems of soil. Living in an urban environment has brought Kara to learn the science behind soil as her garden needs every spare inch to cultivate a harvest. Kara has been featured on Mom 2.0, Type A Parent, and Moms Meet, in addition to running a local gardening group and founder of the Extremely Good Parenting podcast.
- Go from garden newbie to green thumb natural with Karla Harmer during “Seven Tips for the Beginner to Garden Like a Boss.” An advocate for helping people take care of themselves by making the decision to grow their own food, Karla speaks about how to make compost and why boosting soil health is crucial for gardening. Got teens in your house? Karla also taps into gardening with adolescents and how to weave growing into homeschool curriculum.
- Master Urban Farmer and founder of We Sow We Grow Natasha Nicholes started a community garden plot in an empty lot in the West Pullman neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois, which quickly took root in the hearts of her neighbors. Since the first harvest Natasha has been supporting fellow community members with seasonal produce and began tending to a larger online community of gardeners from all walks of life. A genuine interest of creating something useful and beautiful has brought about a nationwide conversation of growers online, full of gardening newbies and seasoned farmers alike.
- Teri Speight’s resume speaks for itself – garden writer, speaker, Region II Director for GardenComm and Master Gardener. Adapting to a new way of gardening instead of giving up as you move into mid-life and on to elders, Teri’s presentation “Gardening As We Age” brings methods and hacks to make gardening a reality for life. In addition to simple and practical suggestions to preserve the joy of gardening, Teri brings alternatives to gardening from the ground up.
